Coffee Time with Carlos Machado Anniversary Episode | 7 Guests, 7 Stories, and the Lessons That Stay With You

Welcome to a special Coffee Time with Carlos Machado Anniversary Episode.

In this solo retrospective, Master Carlos Machado looks back at some of the incredible guests, unforgettable stories, and powerful life lessons that have shaped the journey of Season 1.

This is more than a recap.

It is a reflection on the people who came into the studio and the conversations that stayed with Carlos.

Throughout this anniversary episode, Carlos revisits the stories of Kenny Kim, Brandon McCaghren, Zoltan Bathory, Preacher Lawson, Jenna Quinn, Jaime Barron, and Matt Hamilton of Local Yocal.

Each guest comes from a completely different world. But each one carries a lesson worth remembering.

Carlos begins by reflecting on Kenny Kim, whose story is a powerful example of how martial arts can redirect a life.

From childhood bullying and the struggles of growing up as an immigrant to difficult moments that could have taken his life in a completely different direction, Kenny found something in martial arts that gave him structure, purpose, and eventually a mission.

Kenny's story is about refusing to quit when circumstances give you every reason to stop.

It is also about turning personal experience into a mission. Through the Mat Made Show, his work in the martial arts community, and his insights as an entrepreneur, Kenny has built a career around sharing what he has learned. As the author of The Jiu-Jitsu Millionaire, Kenny represents another important lesson: passion for Jiu-Jitsu is powerful, but if you want to build a sustainable academy and business, you also have to learn how to grow, lead, teach, and create opportunities.

Lesson: Martial arts can save lives—but persistence gives that second chance a purpose.

Carlos then looks back at his relationship with Brandon McCaghren, the self-described nerdy martial artist who may not have believed he had extraordinary natural talent—but had something just as powerful.

Grit. Persistence. Stubbornness.

Brandon's story challenges the idea that success belongs only to the gifted. Carlos reflects on “the curse of the gifted” and the advantage that sometimes belongs to the person who simply refuses to stop. Brandon fell in love with Jiu-Jitsu and became so committed to learning that he famously traveled extraordinary distances to follow Eddie Bravo.

When you truly want something, time and distance become obstacles to solve—not excuses to quit. That same passion eventually helped give birth to the Professional Grappling Federation, taking an idea from the backyard and helping turn it into a major platform for dedicated submission grapplers.

Lesson: Without passion, there is no lifestyle.

From the streets of Hungary to international stages, Zoltan Bathory's story is one of adventure, discipline, leadership, art, and refusing to be contained by mediocrity. Carlos reflects on a young man who chose the road less traveled and decided to write his own life's story. Martial arts became more than training. It became a tool for survival, confidence, discipline, and increasing the odds of success.

Then came the adventure.

With a passport, $500, and a desire to see where life could take him, Zoltan followed the unknown. From performing in bars without knowing the language to becoming a founding force behind Five Finger Death Punch, his story is a reminder that the path is not always visible when you first begin walking it. Carlos also reflects on Zoltan's leadership through art and the philosophy behind the artist. Behind the musician and martial artist, Carlos found something else:

The wise man.

Lesson: Your greatest power may not be found only in what you create—but in the wisdom and conscience you develop along the way.

Carlos knew Preacher Lawson before fully realizing just how successful he was.

At the academy, Preacher arrived under an alias—“Preston”—and trained as another student on the mats. That humility left an impression. Here was an accomplished comedian, actor, writer, and producer with an enormous audience, but he did not need to walk into the room announcing who he was.

But success did not come easily.

His journey included sleeping in cars, moving from place to place, and working his way toward major stages and international audiences. Through it all, another value remained important: Family.

Preacher brought his family into his journey and helped create opportunities for the people closest to him. Carlos also reflects on Preacher's commitment to health, nutrition, exercise, and lifestyle—even in an industry where that kind of discipline can be difficult to maintain.

Lesson: Real success does not require ego. You can become accomplished and still treat everyone with respect.

One of the most powerful stories in this anniversary episode is the journey of Jenna Quinn

Her story is one of healing, courage, faith, advocacy, education, prevention, and purpose. Carlos reflects on Jenna's Law, the Reveal to Heal Foundation, and her memoir, Pure in Heart: A Memoir of Overcoming Abuse and Passing Jenna's Law. But the deepest lesson is about transformation.

A person's worst experience does not have to become their identity.

Fear and shame can keep people silent. Vulnerability can become leadership. Pain can become purpose. Jenna's story demonstrates how one person finding the courage to speak can eventually create an impact far beyond their own life.

Healing → Courage → Advocacy → Prevention → Impact.

Lesson: Protecting the next person can become part of healing yourself.

Carlos also looks back at Jaime Barron, whose story brings together martial arts, struggle, ambition, business, real estate, immigration law, and integrity.

From being a broke college student and aspiring martial artist to facing difficult choices and setbacks, Jaime's journey demonstrates that sometimes following your heart means accepting the uncertainty that comes with it. Carlos reflects on the ultimatum moments in life—the times when you have to decide whether you will follow the safe path or commit to what you truly believe in. Jaime's journey moved from being kicked out to eventually owning his own building and building opportunities from difficult circumstances. Jaime also represents a mindset that many people avoid:

Where others see obstacles, he sees opportunity.

Lesson: It is not always a matter of chance. Sometimes, it is a matter of choice.

The final reflection brings Carlos to Matt Hamilton of Local Yocal.

Matt's journey is about transformation. Carlos looks at how someone who once worked on the “dark side” of agriculture—as a pesticide reseller—eventually changed direction and became committed to sustainable ranching and building a business around a different philosophy. It is a story about making financial decisions based on goodness instead of convenience.

From the realities behind hamburger production to questions about imported food and the meaning of “grass-fed,” the bigger message is simple:

Read the label—but also understand that the label may not tell you the whole story.

Matt took that philosophy and built more than a food business. Through Local Yocal Farm to Market, barbecue, Western wear, events, and education, the mission became a lifestyle and a community.

Lesson: If you are going to build something, build an experience around values you actually believe in.

Seven guests. Seven very different journeys. But one recurring message.

Your circumstances do not have to determine your destination.

This is what Coffee Time with Carlos Machado has always been about.

Not just Jiu-Jitsu. Not just martial arts.

But the people.

The stories. The lessons. And the conversations that remind us to keep learning—both on and off the mats.

Grab a cup of coffee and join Master Carlos Machado for this special anniversary episode as he looks back, reconnects the dots, and shares the wisdom that continues to stay with him.
